Work in progress: first sketch to finished piece

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to write a little about my work in progress from sketching to the final piece. My style is pretty detailed and precise by the time I get to the final piece, which is probably why a few people have been surprised by how they start out. So below are a couple of my pieces from starting sketch to finished illustration.

The Turn of the Screw: internal illustration - Chapter 17

In my drafting phase my sketches are very loose, rough, and not particularly precise. I find this is what enables me to capture more natural movement and fluidity in things like hair and fabric in the final precise and detailed drawings. I also find it best to get all my ideas for an illustration down on paper quickly. This way, I can develop or discount the ones that do or don’t work early on in the process, which gives me more time to work on the detail and finish of the final piece once the client is happy with the rough concept.

The above are examples of a couple of illustrations I've produced recently, but to see regular updates on my work in progress, follow my instagram at alisonschofieldillustration.

Thanks for reading!
